In the spring of 1996 with funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), KARS began producing a bi-weekly map series called the GreenReport® that measures vegetation conditions across the United States. The GreenReport® is produced using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI ) images compiled at EROS Data Center from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imagery. Using these images, five bi-weekly maps are created to illustrate current vegetation greenness and reletave condition:
- Greenness Map - Illustrates locations and amounts of plant biomass. Dark green colors indicate areas containing abundant vegetation. Brown indicates sparse vegetation
- Difference Map 1 - Compares current crop/vegetation change in biomass to the previous week within the same year
- Difference Map 2 - Compares current crop/vegetation biomass to same period from the previous year
- Difference Map 3 - Compares current vegetation/crop biomass to the 20-year greenness average
The current GreenReport® map is also available as a GreenReport® web map. This mapping application is updated each week with the latest data.
